Gargash: Qatari media working against ending Gulf rift

Dubai: Qatari media looks bent on wrecking efforts to resolve the Gulf crisis, UAE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Dr Anwar Gargash said Tuesday.

In June 2017, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain and Egypt broke off diplomatic and transportation links with Qatar, accusing it of supporting terrorism.

Kuwait has since been leading mediation efforts to end the rift.

“Political and social atmosphere in the Arab Gulf looks forward to ending the Qatar crisis and searches for the best means to guarantee Doha’s commitment to any agreement implying good to the region,” Dr Gargash tweeted.

“But the Qatari media platforms appear determined to undermine any agreement. A strange phenomenon that is hard to explain,” he added.

Earlier this month, Kuwait announced that “fruitful” talks have recently been held to end the dispute and that all parties are eager to reach final agreement amid growing optimism about a diplomatic breakthrough.

Kuwait is a member of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), which also comprises Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain, Oman and Qatar.

Saudi Arabia is due to host an annual GCC summit on January 5 expected to tackle an end to the Gulf row, according to Kuwait.
